Cracking WEP Using Backtrack: A Beginner’s Guide

February 12th, 2007 • Linux, wifi

A. SCOPE

This tutorial is intended for user’s with little or no experience with linux or wifi. The folks over atremote-exploit have released “Backtrack” a tool which makes it ridiculously easy to access any network secured by WEP encryption. This tutorial aims to guide you through the process of using it effectively.

Required Tools

You will need a computer with a wireless adapter listed here

Download Backtrack and burn it’s image to a CD

B. OVERVIEW

BACKTRACK is a bootable live cd with a myriad of wireless and tcp/ip networking tools. This tutorial will only cover the included kismet and aircrack-ng suite of tools.

Tools Overview

Kismet – a wireless network detector and packet sniffer

airmon – a tool that can help you set your wireless adapter into monitor mode (rfmon)

airodump – a tool for capturing packets from a wireless router (otherwise known as an AP)

aireplay – a tool for forging ARP requests

aircrack – a tool for decrypting WEP keys

iwconfig – a tool for configuring wireless adapters. You can use this to ensure that your wireless adapter is in “monitor” mode which is essential to sending fake ARP requests to the target router

macchanger – a tool that allows you to view and/or spoof (fake) your MAC address

Glossary of Terms

AP: Access Point: a wireless router

MAC Address: Media Access Control address, a unique id assigned to wireless adapters and routers. It comes in hexadecimal format (ie 00:11:ef:22:a3:6a)

BSSID: Access Point’s MAC address

ESSID: Access Point’s Broadcast name. (ie linksys, default, belkin etc) Some AP’s will not broadcast their name but Kismet may be able to detect it anyway

TERMINAL: MS-Dos like command line interface. You can open this by clicking the black box icon next to the start key in backtrack

WEP: short for Wired Equivalency Privacy, it is a security protocol for Wi-Fi networks

WPA: short for WiFi Protected Access. a more secure protocal than WEP for wireless networks. NOTE: this tutorial does not cover cracking WPA encryption

Since Backtrack is a live CD running off your cdrom, there is nowhere that you can write files to unless you have a linux partition on your hard drive or a usb storage device. Backtrack has some NTFS support so you will be able to browse to your windows based hard drive should you have one, but it will mount the partition as “read-only”. I dual boot windows and ubuntu on my laptop so I already have a linux swap partition and a reiserfs partition. Backtrack had no problem detecting these and mounting them for me. To find your hard drive or usb storage device, just browse to the /mnt folder in the file manager. Typically a hard drive will appear named something like hda1 or hda2 if you have more than one partition on the drive. Alternately hdb1 could show if you have more than one hard disk. Having somewhere to write files that you can access in case you need to reboot makes the whole process a little easier.

C. DISCLAIMER

Hacking into someone’s wireless network without permission is probably against the law. I wouldn’t recommend doing it. I didn’t break into anyone else’s network while learning how to do this.

D. IMPLEMENTATION

STEP 1

Monitoring Wireless Traffic With Kismet

Place the backtrack CD into your cd-rom drive and boot into Backtrack. You may need to change a setting in your bios to boot from cd rom. During boot up you should see a message like “Hit ctrl+esc to change bios settings”. Changing your first boot device to cdrom will do the trick. Once booted into linux, login as root with username: root password: toor. These are the default username and password used by backtrack. A command prompt will appear. Type startx to start KDE (a ‘windows’ like workspace for linux).

Once KDE is up and running start kismet by clicking on the start key and browsing to Backtrack->Wireless Tools -> Analyzers ->Kismet. Alternatively you can open a Terminal and type:

kismet

Kismet will start running and may prompt you for your wireless adapter. Choose the appropriate adapter, most likely ‘ath0′, and sit back as kismet starts detecting networks in range.

NOTE: We use kismet for two reasons.

To find the bssid, essid, and channel number of the AP you are accessing.

Kismet automatically puts your wireless adapter into monitor mode (rfmon). It does this by creating a VAP (virtual access point?) or in other words, instead of only having ath0 as my wireless card it creates a virtual wifi0 and puts ath0 into monitor mode automatically. To find out your device’s name just type:

iwconfig

Which will look something like this:

While kismet detects networks and various clients accessing those networks you might want to type ‘s’ and then ‘Q’ (case sensitive). This sorts all of the AP’s in your area by their signal strength. The default ‘autofit’ mode that kismet starts up in doesn’t allow you much flexibility. By sorting AP’s by signal strength you can scroll through the list with the arrow keys and hit enter on any AP you want more information on. (side note: when selecting target AP keep in mind this tutorial only covers accessing host AP’s that use WEP encryption. In kismet the flags for encryption are Y/N/0. Y=WEP N=Open Network- no encryption 0= other: WPA most likely.) Further reading on Kismet is available here.

Select the AP (access point) you want to access. Copy and paste the broadcast name(essid), mac address(bssid), and channel number of your target AP into a text editor. Backtrack is KDE based so you can use kwrite. Just open a terminal and type in ‘kwrite’ or select it from the start button. In Backtrack’s terminal to copy and paste you use shift+ctrl+c and shift+control+v respectively. Leave kismet running to leave your wireless adapter in monitor mode. You can also use airmon to do this manually.
airmon-ng -h
for more help with this

STEP 2

Collecting Data With Airodump

Open up a new terminal and start airodump so we can collect ARP replies from the target AP. Airodump is fairly straight forward for help with this program you can always type “airodump-ng -h” at the command prompt for additional options.

airodump-ng ath0 -w /mnt/hda2/home/ryan/belkin_slax_rcu 9 1

Breaking down this command:

ath0 is my wireless card

-w tells airodump to write the file to
/mnt/hda2/ryan/belkin_slax_rcu

9 is the channel 9 of my target AP

1 tells airodump to only collect IVS – the data packets with the WEP key

STEP 3

Associate your wireless card with the AP you are accessing.

aireplay-ng -1 0 -e belkin -a 00:11:22:33:44:55 -h 00:fe:22:33:f4:e5 ath0

-1 at the beginning specifies the type of attack. In this case we want fake authentication with AP. You can view all options by typing
aireplay-ng -h

0 specifies the delay between attacks

-e is the essid tag. belkin is the essid or broadcast name of my target AP. Linksys or default are other common names

-a is the bssid tag(MAC address). 00:11:22:33:44:55 is the MAC address of the target AP

-h is your wireless adapters MAC addy. You can use macchanger to view and change your mac address.
macchanger -s ath0

ath0 at the end is my wireless adapters device name in linux

STEP 4

Start packet injection with aireplay

aireplay-ng -3 -b 00:11:22:33:44:55 -h 00:fe:22:33:f4:e5 ath0

NOTES:

-b requires the MAC address of the AP we are accessing.

-h is your wireless adapters MAC addy. You can use macchanger to view and change your mac address.
macchanger -s ath0

if packets are being collected at a slow pace you can type
iwconfig ath0 rate auto
to adjust your wireless adapter’s transmission rate. You can find your AP’s transmission rate in kismet by using the arrow keys up or down to select the AP and hitting enter. A dialog box will pop up with additional information. Common rates are 11M or 54M.

As aireplay runs, ARP packets count will slowly increase. This may take a while if there aren’t many ARP requests from other computers on the network. As it runs however, the ARP count should start to increase more quickly. If ARP count stops increasing, just open up a new terminal and re-associate with the ap via step 3. There is no need to close the open aireplay terminal window before doing this. Just do it simultaneously. You will probably need somewhere between 200-500k IV data packets for aircrack to break the WEP key.

If you get a message like this:

Notice: got a deauth/disassoc packet. Is the source MAC associated ?

Just reassociate with the AP following the instructions on step 3.

STEP 5

Decrypting the WEP Key with Aircrack

Find the location of the captured IVS file you specified in step 2. Then type in a terminal:

aircrack-ng -s /mnt/hda2/home/belkin_slax_rcu-03.ivs

Change /mnt/hda2/home/belkin_slax_rcu-03.ivs to your file’s location

Once you have enough captured data packets decrypting the key will only take a couple of seconds. For my AP it took me 380k data packets. If aircrack doesn’t find a key almost immediately, just sit back and wait for more data packets.

Introduction

BackTrack is one of the more popular distributions in the white hat circles. It is specially suited for penetration testing, with more than 300 tools available for the task. Like both Helix and Protech, BackTrack is based on Ubuntu. This means good stability and hardware detection and a whole lot of software that can be easily obtained.

Sound quite interesting. Let’s see how it behaves. We’re going to check version 4 Beta.

Lots of great stuff

Like most Linux distros – and definitely all forensics/security-oriented tools, BackTrack works primarily as a live CD, with good hardware detection and low memory footprint, intended to make it usable even on older machines. It is also possible to install BackTrack, should one desire.

The boot menu is simple and elegant, with three options.

The second option (Console no FB) stands for Console no Framebuffers, i.e. the failsafe mode with minimal graphics that should work well on all hardware. Thanks k finity! As to the third option, MSRAMDUMP, I did try booting it, but this produced an error and threw me back into the boot menu.

Anyhow …

The distro maintains its elegance by booting into the best-looking console I have seen, with stylish color gradients and mirror effects. You can begin working instantly on the command-line or boot into GUI desktop by issuing startx command.

One thing worth noting in the screenshot above is the mounting error on hda1, which is formatted with Ext4, a relatively new filesystem. In fact, the system I booted BackTrack on hosts a Jaunty install, with the Ext4 root partition. This is something that will probably be solved in future releases.

Desktop

The desktop is simple and functional, running a lightweight KDE3 manager. You get a simple wallpaper with dragon-like theme. Another interesting element is the Run box embedded in the panel, which allows you to run applications without invoking a terminal first.

The network is not enabled by default and you’ll have to fire it up manually.

Tools

BackTrack is all about lots and lots of hacking tools. Once again, I’m only going to present the tools, not show you how to use them. These tools are all double-edged swords, and without the right amount of respect, skill and integrity, you may cause more harm than good. Furthermore, do not deploy them in a production environment without the explicit approval from system administrators and INFOSEC people.

The tools can all be found under Backtrack in the menu, arranged into sub-categories. The collection is long and rich and it will take you a long time pouring over all of them, let alone mastering them. Most of the tools are command-line utilities, with menu items a link to the console with the relevant tool running inside it.

A few practical examples, there’s the venerable nmap, Hydra and hping3:

You may also want to audit Bluetooth devices. On the test machine, there are no Bluetooth devices, which explains the error you see below.

Then, there’s the gdb (GNU Debugger) for analyzing crash dumps and memory cores.

Last but not the least, you get the great Wireshark (formerly Ethereal):

Other programs

BackTrack is mainly loaded with security applications, however it also has a reasonable assortment of “normal” programs. You get Firefox, already configured to use the exceptional Noscript extension.

You also get Synaptic, which makes software management easy and pleasant:

You also have Wine for Windows software.

And then, you can change wallpapers and get classic KDE looks.

How I miss that wallpaper! To the best of my knowledge, it has not been included in most KDE releases since Kubuntu 6.06.

You can find more stuff in the K-menu:

Errors

Being a beta, BackTrack 4 was not the most stable distro. In addition to the Ext4 error during the boot, there were some other problems. For example, both Lynx text browser and QtParted partitioning software refused to work.

Other things

One thing that may bother you is the issue with the documentation section on the official site. It’s secure site, self-signed with an expired certified, at last when this article was written, although the expiration has been in effect since August 2008.

This is not something you expect to see on a site catering to the security-conscious audience.

Furthermore, there’s the small issue of inconsistency when it comes to application names. For example, BlueSmash shows up as blue-smash on the command line, hping3 has a capital H in the menus, etc. BackTrack itself also comes in two flavors, with both lowercase and uppercase Ts.

Overall, there were no big issues, except for the occasional application errors.

This method is being used to crack the wep passwords using BackTrack Live…cd.. NOw lets read it..lol

You already know that if you want to lock down your Wi-Fi network, you should opt for WPA encryption because WEP is easy to crack. But did you know how easy? Take a look.

Today we’re going to run down, step-by-step, how to crack a Wi-Fi network with WEP security turned on. But first, a word: Knowledge is power, but power doesn’t mean you should be a jerk, or do anything illegal. Knowing how to pick a lock doesn’t make you a thief. Consider this post educational, or a proof-of-concept intellectual exercise.

Dozens of tutorials on how to crack WEP are already all over the internet using this method. Seriously—Google it. This ain’t what you’d call “news.” But what is surprising is that someone like me, with minimal networking experience, can get this done with free software and a cheap Wi-Fi adapter. Here’s how it goes.
What You’ll Need

Unless you’re a computer security and networking ninja, chances are you don’t have all the tools on hand to get this job done. Here’s what you’ll need:

A compatible wireless adapter—This is the biggest requirement. You’ll need a wireless adapter that’s capable of packet injection, and chances are the one in your computer is not. After consulting with my friendly neighborhood security expert, I purchased an Alfa AWUS050NH USB adapter, pictured here, and it set me back about $50 on Amazon. Update: Don’t do what I did. Get the Alfa AWUS036H, not the US050NH, instead. The guy in this video below is using a $12 model he bought on Ebay (and is even selling his router of choice). There are plenty of resources on getting aircrack-compatible adapters out there.
A BackTrack 3 Live CD. We already took you on a full screenshot tour of how to install and use BackTrack 3, the Linux Live CD that lets you do all sorts of security testing and tasks. Download yourself a copy of the CD and burn it, or load it up in VMware to get started. (I tried the BackTrack 4 pre-release, and it didn’t work as well as BT3. Do yourself a favor and stick with BackTrack 3 for now.)
A nearby WEP-enabled Wi-Fi network. The signal should be strong and ideally people are using it, connecting and disconnecting their devices from it. The more use it gets while you collect the data you need to run your crack, the better your chances of success.
Patience with the command line. This is an ten-step process that requires typing in long, arcane commands and waiting around for your Wi-Fi card to collect data in order to crack the password. Like the doctor said to the short person, be a little patient.

Crack That WEP

To crack WEP, you’ll need to launch Konsole, BackTrack’s built-in command line. It’s right there on the taskbar in the lower left corner, second button to the right. Now, the commands.

First run the following to get a list of your network interfaces:

airmon-ng

The only one I’ve got there is labeled ra0. Yours may be different; take note of the label and write it down. From here on in, substitute it in everywhere a command includes (interface).

Now, run the following four commands. See the output that I got for them in the screenshot below.

airmon-ng stop (interface)
ifconfig (interface) down
macchanger –mac 00:11:22:33:44:55 (interface)
airmon-ng start (interface)

If you don’t get the same results from these commands as pictured here, most likely your network adapter won’t work with this particular crack. If you do, you’ve successfully “faked” a new MAC address on your network interface, 00:11:22:33:44:55.

Now it’s time to pick your network. Run:

airodump-ng (interface)

To see a list of wireless networks around you. When you see the one you want, hit Ctrl+C to stop the list. Highlight the row pertaining to the network of interest, and take note of two things: its BSSID and its channel (in the column labeled CH), as pictured below. Obviously the network you want to crack should have WEP encryption (in the ENC) column, not WPA or anything else.

Like I said, hit Ctrl+C to stop this listing. (I had to do this once or twice to find the network I was looking for.) Once you’ve got it, highlight the BSSID and copy it to your clipboard for reuse in the upcoming commands.

Now we’re going to watch what’s going on with that network you chose and capture that information to a file. Run:

airodump-ng -c (channel) -w (file name) –bssid (bssid) (interface)

Where (channel) is your network’s channel, and (bssid) is the BSSID you just copied to clipboard. You can use the Shift+Insert key combination to paste it into the command. Enter anything descriptive for (file name). I chose “yoyo,” which is the network’s name I’m cracking.

You’ll get output like what’s in the window in the background pictured below. Leave that one be. Open a new Konsole window in the foreground, and enter this command:

aireplay-ng -1 0 -a (bssid) -h 00:11:22:33:44:55 -e (essid) (interface)

Here the ESSID is the access point’s SSID name, which in my case is yoyo. What you want to get after this command is the reassuring “Association successful” message with that smiley face.

You’re almost there. Now it’s time for:

aireplay-ng -3 -b (bssid) -h 00:11:22:33:44:55 (interface)

Here we’re creating router traffic to capture more throughput faster to speed up our crack. After a few minutes, that front window will start going crazy with read/write packets. (Also, I was unable to surf the web with the yoyo network on a separate computer while this was going on.) Here’s the part where you might have to grab yourself a cup of coffee or take a walk. Basically you want to wait until enough data has been collected to run your crack. Watch the number in the “#Data” column—you want it to go above 10,000. (Pictured below it’s only at 854.)

Depending on the power of your network (mine is inexplicably low at -32 in that screenshot, even though the yoyo AP was in the same room as my adapter), this process could take some time. Wait until that #Data goes over 10k, though—because the crack won’t work if it doesn’t. In fact, you may need more than 10k, though that seems to be a working threshold for many.

Once you’ve collected enough data, it’s the moment of truth. Launch a third Konsole window and run the following to crack that data you’ve collected:

aircrack-ng -b (bssid) (file name-01.cap)

Here the filename should be whatever you entered above for (file name). You can browse to your Home directory to see it; it’s the one with .cap as the extension.

If you didn’t get enough data, aircrack will fail and tell you to try again with more. If it succeeds, it will look like this:

The WEP key appears next to “KEY FOUND.” Drop the colons and enter it to log onto the network.

Set the Incoming port to higher than 45000, I have found that 47532 is a nice selection.

Then make sure you set the max upload speed to at least half of your connection upload speed (this will ensure faster downloading) because high upload speeds are the main cause for slow downloads.

Do not use randomized port on every startup, as this will have problems with your firewall and this is highly unnecessary.

Choose the correct number of maximum connections, too much connections can slow down your torrent download speed instead of speeding them up. For best results use uTorrent’s speed guide found on Options >Speed Guide, and it will suggest you the best settings. For users with a max upload speed of 256 Kbits/s uTorrent suggeests 35 connections per torrent and 60 in total. Check the total speed guide for your type of connection here.

Run as few torrents as possible, this means that your connection can handle and deliver maximum speed for the running torrents. I suggest running 2 torrents if you have a 256 Kbits/s upload speed connection and 1 torrent at a time if you have a 128 Kbits/s upload connection.
When selecting from similar torrents select from the best seeds/peers ratio as well as swarm speed. Here is a guide on how a perfect torrent should be.

If you are using a DSL router then enable port forwarding in your router. If you are using a DSL Modem this is unnecessary.

Enable UPnP Port Mapping And NAT-PMP Port Mapping, (found on Options > Preferences > Connection. If you are manually forwarding your port than keep it UNCHECKED, but if you don’t know what port forwarding is or you?re not forwarding the port manually than CHECK it.
Do not use windows firewall, windows firewall simply hates torrents and you will have a truckload of speed problems with it. Disable it permanantly, and use a secure firewall such as Comodo Firewall or Eset.

Manage your upload slots per torrent, usually it should be 2-3 per torrent. More than that will reduce the download speed of your torrents.

Increase the Net.max_Halfopen Connections to 50-60 in uTorrent Advanced configaration panel, there is also a patch for windows XP to increase this limit. In Windows XP increase the limit to 100 connections.

Enable the following, they greatly improve your download speed.

USE PORT FORWARDING TO ACHIEVE MAXIMUM DOWNLOAD SPEED

Alone in a room in his home in Bonn, Germany, Friedhelm Hillebrand sat at his typewriter, tapping out random sentences and questions on a sheet of paper.

As he went along, Hillebrand counted the number of letters, numbers, punctuation marks and spaces on the page. Each blurb ran on for a line or two and nearly always clocked in under 160 characters.

That became Hillebrand’s magic number — and set the standard for one of today’s most popular forms of digital communication: text messaging.

“This is perfectly sufficient,” he recalled thinking during that epiphany of 1985, when he was 45 years old. “Perfectly sufficient.”

The communications researcher and a dozen others had been laying out the plans to standardize a technology that would allow cellphones to transmit and display text messages. Because of tight bandwidth constraints of the wireless networks at the time — which were mostly used for car phones — each message would have to be as short as possible.

Before his typewriter experiment, Hillebrand had an argument with a friend about whether 160 characters provided enough space to communicate most thoughts. “My friend said this was impossible for the mass market,” Hillebrand said. “I was more optimistic.”

His optimism was clearly on the mark. Text messaging has become the prevalent form of mobile communication worldwide. Americans are sending more text messages than making calls on their cellphones, according to a Nielsen Mobile report released last year.

U.S. mobile users sent an average of 357 texts per month in the second quarter of 2008 versus an average of 204 calls, the report said.

Texting has been a boon for telecoms. Giants Verizon Wireless and AT&T each charge 20 to 25 cents a message, or $20 for unlimited texts. Verizon has 86 million subscribers, while AT&T’s wireless service has 78.2 million.

And Twitter, the fastest growing online social network, which is being adopted practically en masse by politicians, celebrities …

… and news outlets, has its very DNA in text messaging. To avoid the need for splitting cellular text messages into multiple parts, the creators of Twitter capped the length of a tweet at 140 characters, keeping the extra 20 for the user’s unique address.

Back in 1985, of course, the guys who invented Twitter were probably still playing with Matchbox cars.

Credit: Friedhelm Hillebrand

Hillebrand found new confidence after his rather unscientific investigations. As chairman of the nonvoice services committee within the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), a group that sets standards for the majority of the global mobile market, he pushed forward the group’s plans in 1986. All cellular carriers and mobile phones, they decreed, must support the short messaging service (SMS).

Looking for a data pipeline that would fit these micro messages, Hillebrand came up with the idea to harness a secondary radio channel that already existed on mobile networks.

This smaller data lane had been used only to alert a cellphone about reception strength and to supply it with bits of information regarding incoming calls. Voice communication itself had taken place via a separate signal.

“We were looking to a cheap implementation,” Hillebrand said on the phone from Bonn. “Most of the time, nothing happens on this control link. So, it was free capacity on the system.”

Initially, Hillebrand’s team could fit only 128 characters into that space, but that didn’t seem like nearly enough. With a little tweaking and a decision to cut down the set of possible letters, numbers and symbols that the system could represent, they squeezed out room for another 32 characters.

Still, his committee wondered, would the 160-character maximum be enough space to prove a useful form of communication? Having zero market research, they based their initial assumptions on two “convincing arguments,” Hillebrand said.

For one, they found that postcards often contained fewer than 150 characters.

Second, they analyzed a set of messages sent through Telex, a then-prevalent telegraphy network for business professionals. Despite not having a technical limitation, Hillebrand said, Telex transmissions were usually about the same length as postcards.

Just look at your average e-mail today, he noted. Many can be summed up in the subject line, and the rest often contains just a line or two of text asking for a favor or updating about a particular project.

But length wasn’t SMS’s only limitation. “The input was cumbersome,” Hillebrand said. With multiple letters being assigned to each number button on the keypad, finding a single correct letter could take three or four taps. Typing out a sentence or two was a painstaking task.

A GSM document outlining the definition of SMS. Credit: Friedhelm Hillebrand.

Later, software such as T9, which predicts words based on the first few letters typed by the user, QWERTY keyboards such as the BlackBerry’s and touchscreen keyboards including the iPhone’s made the process more palatable.

But even with these inconveniences, text messaging took off. Fast. Hillebrand never imagined how quickly and universally the technology would be adopted. What was originally devised as a portable paging system for craftsmen using their cars as a mobile office is now the preferred form of on-the-go communication for cellphone users of all ages.

“Nobody had foreseen how fast and quickly the young people would use this,” Hillebrand said. He’s still fascinated by stories of young couples breaking up via text message.

When he tells the story of his 160-character breakthrough, Hillebrand says, people assume he’s rich. But he’s not.

There are no text message royalties. He doesn’t receive a couple of pennies each time someone sends a text, like songwriters do for radio airplay. Though “that would be nice,” Hillebrand said.

Now Hillebrand lives in Bonn, managing Hillebrand & Partners, a technology patent consulting firm. He has written a book about the creation of GSM, a $255 hardcover tome.

Following an early retirement that didn’t take, Hillebrand is pondering his next project. Multimedia messaging could benefit from regulation, he said. With so many different cellphones taking photos, videos and audio in a variety of formats, you can never be sure whether your friend’s phone will be able to display it.

But he’s hoping to make a respectable salary for the work this time.
